Total’s program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by CCUS

Greenhouse gas emission is a great threat for our environment due to its effects on global warming. These gases can trap heat in the atmosphere. They mainly consist of: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) which enters atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, solid waste …, Methane (CH4) which can be emitted through coal, natural gas and oil production and transmission process and some agricultural activities, Nitrogen Dioxide (No2) which emit during agricultural and industrial activities and Fluorinated gases emitted by industrial processes.

The point is that, more than 70% of greenhouse gases emission is caused by CO2. Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is known as an effective method to control CO2 emissions. This process recycles CO2 through some industrial solutions or stores it underground.

This method can capture industrial facilities emissions up to 95% which can be effective on worldwide greenhouse gas emissions up to 14% until 2050. In order to keep global warming below 2°C, 5 billion metric tons of CO2 should be captures in each year, until 2050. Total which is one of the major energy operators has committed to consider about greenhouse gas emission effects in its activities and allocated a remarkable budget for using CCUS technologies. The company also supports the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) which assigned more than a billion dollars to improve clean technologies.
